evolution of a design

I've been really obsessing over doing my own murals lately.  I worked on these designs for a proposal in my sketchbook over the weekend.  The ideas start out really flat then gain some depth.   My favorites are 4 and 7.  I've only done 1 or 2 murals/signs in spray paint but I think it would be really cool to try to make some of those textures you get with pencil and marker with the spray paint.

Here are a few 10 and 20 minute figure drawings from last weeks figure drawing session at the Bathaus Coworking space in Bushwick.  All of these drawings are on paper that is 9 x 12 inches.

Hair Fair sign complete

I just finished painting both sides of this aluminum sign for a hair salon down here in Barbados.  I was thinking "tropical nouveau" and used a few Mucha illustrations for reference.  I am really happy with the outcome and ready to start back up with my own paintings of the island.

finished and hanging

I layed out the sign the "old-school" way with a grid.  Since I designed everything by hand and had no access to a projector I decided to draw out the design.  This was especially easy with the grid and considering I already had two preliminary designs drawn up.

My second design, taking into consideration the actual dimensions of the sign.  I had originally "eye-balled" the dimensions for the first design and I was WAY off.  Always get the dimensions correct.  Since the client was happy with the design I started choosing a color scheme which is pretty close to the colors I ultimately used.

The initial design lay-out, which, like I said, was way off.  But the basic lay-out remained the same.

and the travel continues. . .

I spent the first part of the week in Aspen painting a mural for the Food and Wine Festival.  More travel means more photographs and more sketchbook drawings.  I've decided to intersperse them here.  The sketches are small, and the photographs are from disposable cameras.  I've been that guy this year.
