Inspired by Nathan Fowlkes, whose work you can check out by searching for Land Sketch, I started doing some landscape paintings around NYC in the summer of 2012. Most of these are 9x12 and painted from observation. At work I am so used to copying artwork that is given to me I wanted to work on painting what I was looking at without the aid of a sketch and without being able to check my values/colors. This was a really good exercise and I learned a lot about composition.

Central Park. I'm so used to painting on the street with people watching I usually don't get nervous. For some reason I was though with this one. People would come up behind and look over my shoulder. When I was almost finished a little girl came up and exclaimed, "Look he's painting, and it ACTUALLY looks like that!" haha thanks |

this one was actually painted from a photograph I took while I was working in St. Louis. |
